VITON – WHAT IS IT?

This is an exceptional product that is created in the process of fluorine rubber monomer copolymerization. Although the name Viton® is a trademark registered to DuPont, the material itself can be found on the market under other names – e.g. FKM and FPM, and these are equivalent terms.

Viton® gaskets are products of very high quality that exhibit exceptional resistance. The strength of these gaskets makes it possible to apply them under conditions where extreme temperatures or substances with aggressive action are present. They are also highly resistant to mechanical damage. The specifications of this fluorine elastomer enables its application in extreme conditions.

Material information.

Fluorine rubber is a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and fluoroolefin, which is obtained through free-radical polymerization of diene and ethylene compounds.

Rubber vulcanizates based on fluorine rubber are characterized by very high resistance to heat, non-flammability, resistance to swelling and to the action of aggressive chemicals. This effect was achieved thanks to the high bond energy of the fluorine atom with the carbon atom as well as the totally closed main chain, which stabilizes the molecule.

FKM/FPM fluorine rubber gaskets are highly resistant to oxidation and aging processes as well as to the action of ozone and weather conditions. This resistance increases as fluorine content in the mixture increases, which reduces the elasticity of vulcanizates at low temperatures.
